Folk tales around OISHI

Ogawa Hachiman Shrine and Daihannya Scriptures

Ogawa Hachiman Shrine is a tutelary shrine of old Ogawa Village (present southern part of Nokami Town, the mountainside area of Mt. OISHI). Actually, I am a member of the parishioners of this shrine. Although a detailed story about the foundation is not clear, "Ogawa Village History" says that, in the 10th century, this shrine invited gods from Oishi Shrine located nearby the top of Mt.OISHI, and also invited other gods from Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine of Kyoto.

This shrine has long been succeeding the Daihannya Scriptures with 600 volumes. Studies have made clear that the collection of these scriptures began in 1363 by two people lived in Sakamoto district (the place I am living in) , and took more than 100 years until the completion in 1472. More than 100 volumes of them are considered to be written in Nara era (middle of the 8th century), those are academically precious materials. Though 5 districts in old Ogawa Village had been keeping these scriptures in these 70 years, now Ogawa Hachiman Shrine keeps them in newly built storehouse. You can see them only in July 26th, at the "Hannyae" festival performed by the parishioners.
